Abstract We consider the problem of stabilizing PDE–ODE cascade systems in which input is applied to PDE system whose output drives ODE system. also dual constructing an observer for ODE–PDE system, measured. The these problems exponentially stable and unstable. While models plant both problems, actuator stabilization sensor problem. In literature, have been solved specific using backstepping approach. contrast, present work we abstract framework by letting be any regular linear Using a state transformation obtained solving Sylvester equation with unbounded operators, first diagonalize operator corresponding systems. then solve estimation problem, provided they are solvable, certain finite-dimensional counterparts. derive necessary sufficient conditions verifying solvability problems. show that controller solves robust perturbations. illustrate our theory designing 1D diffusion wave equation.

Compensating actuator and sensor dynamics governed by diffusion PDEs

For (possibly unstable) ODE systems with actuator delay, predictor-based infinite-dimensional feedback can compensate for actuator delay of arbitrary length and achieve stabilization. We extend this concept to another class of PDE-ODE cascades, where the infinite-dimensional part of the plant is of diffusive, rather than convective type. We derive predictor-like feedback laws and observers, with...

Actuator and sensor placement in linear advection PDE with building systems application

We study the problem of actuator and sensor placement in a linear advection partial differential equation (PDE). The problem is motivated by its application to actuator and sensor placement in building systems for the control and detection of a scalar quantity such as temperature and contaminants. We propose a gramian based approach to the problem of actuator and sensor placement. The special s...

Methods for Compensating for Control Allocator and Actuator Interactions

In this work, a method, which post-processes the output of a control allocation algorithm, is developed to compensate for actuator dynamics. In reaching this objective, it is of great importance to consider the real-world applicability of the approach. In order to obtain an algorithm which can operate in real-time on a typical flight computer, it is pertinent to not add to the complexity of the...

Polynomial Solution of Sylvester Matrix Equation

where X ∈ M(n,m)(K), play a central role in many areas of applied mathematics and in particular in systems and control theory. It is well known that if K is an algebraically closed field then the matrix equation (1) possesses a unique solution if and only if the matrices A and B have no common eigenvalues (see [[3]] and [11]). In this work we give a brief survey of methods used to solve the (SM...
